AI eBook Suite writes your books with an AI model from OpenAI, or from one of the many providers available through OpenRouter, using an API key from your own account. The provider bills you directly for what your books use; we add no markup. Creating a key takes a few minutes.
Keep your key secret
An API key works like a password for your provider account and anyone who has it can spend your credit. Never share it or publish it. On AI eBook Suite it is stored encrypted and never shown again.
OpenAI API key
With an OpenAI key you can use OpenAI's GPT models. The generator lists the chat models your key can use, read live from OpenAI. Note: a ChatGPT subscription (Plus, Pro) does not include API usage, which is paid separately.
- Create an account: go to platform.openai.com and sign up with your email, Google, Microsoft or Apple account.
- Verify your account: confirm your email address. OpenAI may also ask you to verify a phone number.
- Add credit: in Settings → Billing, add a payment method and buy credit (usually at least $5). The API is prepaid: when the credit runs out, requests stop until you top up.
- Set a limit: in Settings → Limits you can set a monthly budget and email alerts. Recommended.

What it costs
OpenAI charges per token (roughly, per word read and written), with different prices for each model. See openai.com/api/pricing. As a rough guide, a 10-chapter book of about 20,000 words costs from a few cents with budget models to roughly $1.50–3.50 with premium and top-tier ones; the cost table on our homepage gives estimates for each model and book length.
OpenRouter API key
OpenRouter gives you hundreds of models from many AI labs (including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Mistral and DeepSeek) with one key and one prepaid balance. The generator lists the OpenRouter models suitable for long texts.
- Create an account: go to openrouter.ai and sign up with Google, GitHub or your email.
- Buy credits: on the Credits page, add a payment method and buy credit (a few dollars are enough to start). Models marked
:freework without credit but have strict rate limits and often stop halfway through long books. - Open the Keys page: from the menu, or directly at openrouter.ai/keys.
- Create the key:
- Click Create Key.
- Give it a name, for example "AI eBook Suite".
- Set a credit limit for the key (recommended): it caps what it can spend.
- Click Create.
- Copy and save it: copy the key straight away (it starts with
sk-or-; it is shown only once) and paste it on our API Keys page with OpenRouter as the provider.

One account and one balance for models from many labs: you can compare models, choose cheaper ones for drafts and premium ones for the final book, and switch at any time without new keys. Prices are shown for each model on openrouter.ai.

- Save your key on the API Keys page (in the menu once you are logged in).
- Write your first book: open Generate eBook, describe it and follow it being written.
Good habits
Use a separate key for AI eBook Suite, set a spending limit with your provider, and check its dashboard from time to time. If you think a key has leaked, delete it in the provider dashboard and create a new one, then replace it on our API Keys page.
